On Thursday, May 17 five of the students from HRM, attending the Canada-Wide Science Fair inToronto, received Medals of Excellence.

Bronze Medals in the Senior Category (grades 11 & 12) were received by Ellen Withers and Briony Merritt, Grade 11, Citadel High School.  Bronze Medals in the Intermediate Category (grades 9 & 10) were received by Peter Issekutz, Grade 9, Fountain Academy of the Sacred Heart and Julia Sarty, Grade 9, Gorsebrook Junior High.  A Gold Medal in the Junior Category (grades 7 & 8 ) was presented to Terra Lanteigne, Grade 8, Bedford Academy.

These students competed in their school science fairs where they were selected to compete against over 100 other students from Halifax in the Halifax Sci-Tech Expo in March. As a result of that competition, they were selected to represent the Halifax Region in Charlottetown at the national competition from May 12 to 19.

Registration fees, travel and other expenses for the six participants from Halifax were provided by the following sponsors; Encana (1), Halifax Regional School Board (3), Saint Mary’s University and Natural Forces Technologies, Inc. (1).  The Halifax Region is one of 103 regions across Canada which are affiliated with Youth Science Canada, the organizers of Canada’s science fair program and the Canada-Wide Science Fair.  This year close to 500 students from every province and territory competed in the national event.

In addition to a grueling day of judging, public and school viewings of projects, and the opportunity to meet many new friends, the students participated in social and cultural events and tours throughout the week.  They attended an opening gala at the Delta Prince Edward where they were entertained by Island musicians “10 Strings and a Goatskin” and comedians/musicians “Chuck and Albert”.  The awards ceremony was held at Homburg Theatre  in Confederation Center of the Arts. The awards ceremony was followed by a banquet at the Confederation Center and a dance at the UPEI Campus.
